WHAT WE DO

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a highly efficient method of body conditioning that focuses on posture, breath control, flexibility and toning and strengthening muscles. It’s slow, controlled movements means that it is suitable for all ages.

It is a form of body re-education which concentrates on what is known as core stabilisation. Core stabilisation focuses on the torso and builds inner muscular strength. This then gives stability to move the limbs efficiently and safely.

The Origin Of Pilates

Pilates is named after its founder, Joseph Pilates. Born in 1880, he suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, and it was through these diseases that he developed a method of overcoming them. He became particularly interested in the human frame and studied musculature alongside Eastern forms of exercise, such as yoga. As a prisoner of war in England he devised exercises to keep himself and his fellow inmates fit. On his released he developed Pilates.

The key elements of Pilates are:

  • Lengthening short muscles and strengthening weak ones
  • Improving the quality of movement
  • Focusing on core postural muscles to stabilise the body
  • Working to place the breath correctly
  • Controlling even the smallest movements
  • Understanding and improving good body mechanics
  • Mental relaxation

WHAT WE DO

Fitball Exercise for Over 50’s and Core & Balance Classes

Using fitballs to exercise is an excellent way to help build strength by engaging muscle groups, improve your flexibility, and increase core stability, all of which are important for maintaining a healthy musculoskeletal system and improving overall fitness.

The class is suitable for all abilities and fitness levels and is limited to a maximum number of 6-8 participants, meaning that the exercises can be tailored to your own requirements.

The class is particularly suitable for those who have arthritic spines, knees and hips as the exercises can help to build muscles around these joints without putting too much stress on the body, or those who are struggling to exercise effectively due to other musculoskeletal conditions.

Available Classes
